A Maldives Surfing Vacation

The Maldives is one of the best surfing destinations in the world. North and East of Male, famous breaks such as Chicken, Coke, Ninja's, and Sultan can give you the ride of a lifetime.  Surfing has become more popular in the islands since there are excellent breaks accessible from resorts close to Malé almost year-round. Surfing safaris to the outer atolls can be arranged, but it is always best to book surf trips prior to arrival. The Maldives is definitely not the destination where a surfer can rock up with a few boards and head for the waves.  Regardless, look forward to sandy beaches, crystal clear waters, great surf, and gorgeous flora and fauna.

The North Male Atoll season runs from April-October, and the Outer Atolls season is Feb-Apr, Sep-Nov.  The best waves can be had from April to October, with the biggest swells likely to occur in June-September. Throughout these months, conditions are predominantly off-shore all day due to the monsoonal winds from the Indian Subcontinent and the swell generated from the south. The surf generally ranges in size from 3-8 feet,  however bigger days have been experienced. A great variety of reef breaks exist ranging in intensity from quite mellow shreddable walls to gnarlier hollow pits. There are waves here for the recreational surfer and the seasoned high performance kahuna.
